THE OLD BREAD BOARD

The last excursion I had with mother was to the local farmer's market.  I was called in to decorate the house in anticipation for Thanksgiving.  In an effort to do something out of the norm (I am the gay one), I decided we would use the old family bread board and fill it will small gourds to do something natural.
For those of you that are not familiar with a bread board it is a hollowed out piece of wood, typically a hardwood of some sort, that cooks would use to mix the ingredients in order to create wonderful fluffy biscuits.  My mother was not one of those cooks.  She tried...bless her heart.  Brown and serve rolls were more her speed. Regardless, the bread board was a family heirloom of sorts and very decorative.  Mother was always very decorative!
We set about our task with determination and diligence.  After several hours we have created a lovely vignette on the sideboard as well as a welcoming vignette at the front entrance. Tired and proud of our creative accomplishments, we called it a day.
One week later almost to the day mother had a stroke.  She passed five days later.  The bread broad is now with me.  It has not been used in 17 years.  She never saw that Thanksgiving but she had already made her menu list written, which is safely tucked away with one of her photos.

Treasure your time with your loved ones.  You never know when it will be the last.

As always...DT
