COMING TOGETHER

This email just came over a few minutes ago from the clergy of Christ Church...my church...and the church of many before me.  I would love to share it with all of you at this critical time for our nation.

Dear Parish Family,

In the wee hours of this morning we learned not only the results of our national, state, and local elections, but the depth of the division within the United States. Some are celebrating the election results and are greeting today with joy and optimism while others are deeply disappointed and fearful about the future direction of this nation we love. Having endured a bitter, vitriolic presidential campaign, all of us—irrespective of our political persuasion—are hopeful for healing and reconciliation and desire a national conversation that respects the dignity of every human being. Please know that if you need someone to talk with about how you are feeling, we are here for you and will welcome the opportunity for conversation.

Jesus prayed for unity among all God’s people in these words:

The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—
Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
So they might be one heart and mind with us.
Then the world might believe that you, in fact, sent me.
The same glory you gave me, I gave them,
So they’ll be as unified and together as we are—
I in them and you in me.  (John 17)

This is a time for prayer and deep reflection. It is a time for generosity of spirit and humility, as well. As we consider how far we are from Jesus’ dream for us, we ask God, “Send out your light and truth that they may lead us into your loving presence.” On Sunday, we will include "Prayers for our National Life" (The Book of Common Prayer, 838) in our Sunday services and we will continue to hold one another in prayer.

We are united in our love for one another and our love for you, this congregation. We give thanks that God is not finished with us yet.

Together in Christ,

The Rev. James P. Adams
The Rev. Jennifer C. Brown
The Rev. Meg Buerkel Hunn
The Rev. Mary Davila
The Rev. Callie E. Swanlund

as always...xxdt
