Heritage Dinner, Politics, and Karma

I published this post a few back. Since that time my hometown has been hit hard by Hurricane Irene. The folks at Bums have been feeding the crews working hard to get power restored.....karma!

In our little Southern hometown of Ayden there is a BBQ restaurant called Bums. Do not mistake this for a place that only serves pork BBQ. They make the best fried chicken and banana pudding anywhere I have ever eaten...including my Mammy's house...and that is saying something!
So this Tuesday evening, a large group of us hometown folk assembled at my home in Raleigh, got fueled up with some "porchtails", and headed down to The Pit, and "upscale" BBQ joint downtown for what was billed as a Heritage Dinner. A Heritage Dinner is a way to sell a six dollar plate of food for $35 per head y'all....but we did it out of respect for our home folk. A big time was had by all, even though when we got there they seated us in the back room and DT had to push his way into the "fancy" room so we could see the goings on and pay the $35 to eat the $6 plate of food....doncha know.
During the course of our evening, we met the other "high rollers" in the fancy room, and low and behold I meet the parents of a former client...you never know who you will meet at a BBQ joint. Much to my pleasure, they were delightful folks! I made sure to tell them to give my best to the FORMER client. Ahem!
So today I posted quite a few photos on the Facebook...y'all know about the Facebook...it is how we keep track of each other, and some high minded fancy NYC fella starts in about how he cannot imagine that a gay man could be a Republican...well...I took issue with that. Y'all, he looked like he needed a piece of fried chicken and some puddin' and he would feel much better. Accused ol' DT of being one of those "Southern Gays"...damn skippy...and proud of it city boy. Then he had the nerve to imply we were all racist. I am just sayin' he better not let me turn Larry Dennis on him if he wants to priss down Park Avenue again!
You see...where I am from it don't matter if you are straight, gay, black, white, yellow, rich, poor, Democrat or Republican...good food and good folks are what life is all about. So the next time you think you know it all, remember that you don't know nothing until you have broke bread with folks...BBQ is the great neutralizer y'all.

xx/DT
