The Amendment

I live in what is generally known as one of the more progressive of the Southern states.  The great state of North Carolina.  This state has produced incredible talents...to many to list in this venue.  I find it unfortunate that a few politicians on Jones St. have cooked up an amendment to our constitution to classify an entire group of it's citizens as second rate.

By second rate, I mean not worthy of equal rights and protections under the law.  Most gay couples I know have no desire for the traditional marriage that is preformed in the church and governed by the state.  My quess is that most want equal rights afforded to long term committed domestic parteners...the 401k, retirement, insurance, end of life issues, inheritance protection, etc.

Today we have a vote...a historic vote.  This vote will affect not only gay people, but a much wider group due to verbage of the amdendment.

The amount of time, energy, and MONEY spent by groups on both sides of this issue could have done so much good for children, schools, the elderly, the sick and homeless...all right here in our state.

The arguement for traditional marriage is just so laughable that I will only mention this in passing...how many "straight" friends (or yourself) have been married more than once. If the word of the Lord is used to defend this amendment, then I suggest be very careful.  Christ had much to say about divorce and never spoke about what we call homosexuality.

Check your own house and your own family before you vote.   What if your precious 3 year old comes to you in 17 years and says he/she is gay?  How would you vote then?  Would you deny your child or a family member equal protection under the law?  If you would then I am sorry to have wasted your time reading this.

Think before you vote and go in love.
