Grandma's sofa

In today's disposable world we tend to dismiss the cherished items of the past in favor of something newer and more modern.  I favor a mix...old and new...modern and traditional.  Not only does it show a level of respect for what came before, but it gives a home depth.

The classic example is Grandmother's sofa.  This is the one that no one ever sat on unless it was for the garden club, a holiday, or someone died (sorry to be morbid).  I say let's find a way to incorporate a select few pieces of our history in a modern way for today's home.  The photo below is a prime example of what I mean.  I would love to give credit to the designer, but this pic showed up on my Pinterest page.  Whoever you are, I respect your talents.

This sofa is exactly the one so many of us (especially in the South) saw in our Grandmother's parlor.  This one has been reinvented in a delightful yellow silk with a pink silk pillow and grounded by the overall gray palette through the drapery panels, wall color and side chairs.  Add a bit of glitz with the mirror and you end up with a very current...even modern interpretation of some very traditional pieces.  I could envision adding a very modern painting in a gilded frame in place of the mirror.  Granny chic?

The moral here is don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.  History is not a dirty word.  Vintage is another word for cool.  Think outside the box and be creative in order to make your family history an ongoing part of your daily life.
