Where to put the bed?

As a Realtor, one of the most frequently asked questions I get asked when showing homes is "where do I put the bed?"  In newer homes the answer is typically rather obvious, but in older homes it can be a bit more complicated.

Many times the only option is to place the bed in front of a window.  As a designer by training, a decorator, and now a Realtor, a window is not the most attractive or practical place to position a bed.  Let's think outside the box.  The picture above made creative use of shuttered doors to make a screen.  This is a perfect solution!  You do not lose all the light, you disguise the window, and you get the privacy you would if you have drapery, shades, or blinds.  You could also place a headboard against the screen if you like for an extra layer of decoration.

There is nothing worse when showing homes than seeing a lonely mattress and box spring setting against the wall.  A very affordable DIY project is to make an upholstered headboard!  A bit of wood, padding, and fabric is all that is required (and a little skill), but no sewing!  Below are some ideas of shapes that are very easy to cut...watch your fingers please!  Plus, it will add some color and shape to your room without breaking the bank.  Imagine the bed above without the headboard!

A few more bed tips...PLEASE do not angle the bed into the room.  This really eats up your floor space and always give a bad "juju" to the room.  Only if you live in a huge loft does this work....trust DT on this one.  Also, when getting your home ready to list (or just in general), invest in white or ivory linens.  It gives the mental impression of the bedroom as a spa like environment ...think about your favorite hotel.  Plus you can accessorize with any color or pattern!

Now to take a nap!  ZZZZZ/DT
